University Houses Roofing Replacement

The University Houses community, a UW-Madison housing facility, serves students with families, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, academic staff, University staff, and UW-Madison faculty. The 20-acre apartment complex comprises 146 apartments in 31 separate buildings.

Due to excessive maintenance needs and deterioration of the existing original roofing systems, the University determined it was necessary to replace the roofs. Assemblage Architects (Middleton, WI) engaged Building Envelope Professionals Group to complete a full condition assessment on each building, followed by design development and construction administration support for the steep-slope roofs on all 31 buildings.

Several unforeseen circumstances arose during the demolition of the old roofs that required collaboration between all parties to serve the client’s needs as best as possible. Due to the age and historic nature of the community, the design team was also required to coordinate design decisions with the Wisconsin Historical Society and UW System Administration and UW-Madison historic preservation officers.
